TV/VIDEO

Throughout my degree I have been drawn to TV and video work.

It is one of the areas of media where I have had the most experience and feel most at home.

Whether working on a straight news packages, a historical documentary or presenting a bulletin–working in video comes second-nature to me now.

Maryhill Burgh Halls

Since graduating and moving back to Maryhill, my hometown, I have volunteered as a researcher and documentarian for the Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust (MBHT) and their Maryhill Museum project – an initiative to start a local museum for the area.

My role has been primarily to create multi-media content for the museum i.e. documentaries. I have also created engaging social media content and designed posters and information placards for the museum itself.

The projects have been very research intensive and a fantastic way to keep my writing, filming, editing and presenting skills sharp. I have filmed on location for MBHT at sensitive locations such as the War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle, the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre at Nitshill and on the rooftop of one of the famous Wynford high flats in the Maryhill Barracks Housing Estate.

History of Jenners Department Store

I presented, edited and organised this video on the history of Jenners Department Store in Edinburgh in advance of their 180th anniversary.

It was a valuable experience for me as I able not only to develop my skills in writing and presenting a video, but also in many other organisational aspects of the process such as pitching the idea, gaining access to the building and scheduling a shoot with a limited time available at an important location.

Columbia Police Department Hiring Changes

This is a TV package I created for the Broadcast 1 (B1) course at the Missouri School of journalism. The course was taught by broadcast journalists from the local NBC affiliate station – KOMU 8 News.

This particular story was important to my professional development as it gave me experience of covering every aspect of a story. Here I spoke to police training experts, police recruitment officers and an academic who studies community policing. It was very educational and enlightening as to whose voices are important in a story.

Calls for University to Divest From Fossil Fuels

Another of my Missouri packages. This story concerned student groups calling on the University of Missouri System – which includes the universities of Saint Louis and Kansas City – to divest from fossil fuels.

This was one of the first TV packages I ever created in its entirety and it taught me many lessons about editing and filming.

EN4 News TV Bulletin

As part of the journalism degree at Edinburgh Napier, we produce radio and TV bulletins on these assessed practical days to a professional broadcast standard.

For the TV Bulletins I co-presented the programme. I found the in studio experience exciting and nerve wracking – being the face of a days work in the newsroom was incredibly rewarding and challenging. After taking on the role of presenter,  I aspire to work in broadcast above all other media.
