SCOTT HOPE
JOURNALIST
PRINT/ONLINE
Throughout the newsdays at Napier, working at NPR in Missouri and while on a two-week internship at the Sunday Herald I have enjoyed developing my skills writing news and features for print and online.

Sunday Herald
I spent the easter break last year at the Sunday Herald – now the Herald on Sunday. Whilst there, I worked on lifestyle features for the Easter Sunday edition, wrote columns about science and technology and the history of the terror group ISIS.
The short internship was instrumental in my understanding of the print media landscape in the UK. I learnt a lot about news values and sourcing stories while at the paper.
On top of that, being able to shadow some of the papers award-winning journalists, taking advice from them and observing their process was incredibly enlightening.
Another aspect of the internship that was eye opening for me was simply practising journalism in Glasgow, my hometown. While no longer a Glasgow centric paper, being in the offices alongside the evening times and the Hearld weekly paper the heritage of journalism in Glasgow was something which I could feel in the newsroom.

ENGAGE Magazine
ENGAGE Magazine is the publication linked to the Napier newsdays focused around print.
As we had freedom in choosing our stories for each issue, I chose to take on science and environmental stories as often as possible.
In each story I learned something new about being on this specialist beat, covering an event in science with NASA's InSight on Mars, understanding a meteorological story in the February heatwave and history of science for international women's day.
